What are Dental Retainers?

Orthodontic Retainers are custom-made devices, usually made of wires or clear plastic, that hold teeth in position after surgery or any method of realigning teeth.

With the advancements in computer technology and dental materials today, we have a clear thermoplastic material that can move the teeth - little by little - by using a sequence of retainers without having braces in the mouth.

Fixed Retainers are cleaned with normal brushing and flossing; however, using a Waterpik Water Flosser can be far more effective than flossing.

Removable retainers are exposed to bacteria, which can colonize on the retainers, resulting in plaque. These retainers can be cleaned by rinsing in water and brushing gently with a soft toothbrush and a small amount of nonabrasive toothpaste.
